Uncertain festival futures: how European music festival organisers navigate ‘loss’

Risk management and the navigation of loss are inherent to working conditions within festival industry. With festivals cancelled, postponed or redesigned, coronacrisis has deeply affected already uncertain sector. Based on thirty-five interviews with Danish, Dutch British music organisers, this article examines which losses organisers experienced when faced a social trauma that disrupted their ontological security. Additionally, it analyses how they have coped responded situation via organisational emotional strategies. Three phases in cope identified, where individual responses play varying, complementary roles: (1) imminent short-term its realisation, (2) acceptance (3) moving beyond loss. The analysis reveals managing potential personal facing crisis should not merely be seen terms rational decision-making process but is also mediated by experience as only livelihood, work identity existentially challenged. Implications drawn nature cultural work, attention entwinement professional identities.
